Why pre-plan your final arrangements?

Life is full of planning and preparation, and planning final arrangements should be no exception. One thing is certain. It is best to decide when you are healthy and strong what final arrangements meet your needs.

Advance planning for burial can be a mitzvah.   We ensure that family and friends take time to grieve and mourn the loss, and not have last minute burial decisions, funeral preparations and financial responsibilities. We ensure that our wishes are understood and will be observed, and we also spare our loved ones painful and difficult choices.  When death occurs, our loved ones’ time can be spent on Jewish ritual, and on celebrating and remembering your life.

Planning in advance is also the most economical choice. In fact, many people use their tax refund to pre-plan and pre-pay. Start by having an open conversation with your loved ones about your wishes.   Take the opportunity to collect and organize your vital information – finances, insurance policies, real estate holdings, bank and investment accounts, and important passwords. Then make your plans and arrange for payment.

The Beth El Mausoleum can be an immense support when discussing your and your family’s needs. Clergy can guide you with Jewish customs and traditions, and our Beth El Mausoleum Director can discuss various choices including payment options. A Guide For Your Loved Ones can be picked up from the Beth El Mausoleum, and is a convenient compendium of your critical information and important decisions.

According to Temple Beth El’s Rabbi Jessica Spitalnic Brockman, one of the things that makes Temple Beth El so special is that there is a love of place, and that love of place extends to the Beth El Mausoleum.  “It is holy ground where our loved ones are laid to rest, and the family and friends who come to visit feel the power of place, and the power of memory in the Mausoleum.”

Preparing for the difficult days that follow our own passing and the loss of those we love is holy work. Our preparations now will ease the way for those we love in the most difficult of days and will remove our own burden that worrying and uncertainty may bring.

In the book of Ecclesiastes we read: “The wise bear in mind that there is a time for every experience. Let us use our wisdom to prepare for our eventual demise, in order that we might live a full life in peace.”
